Intentional or undetermined intent poisoning deaths 2003 (Northern Ireland
2002):
There were 2,002 intentional or undetermined deaths due to poisoning in Britain
and Ireland, split as follows:

Scotland had a significantly higher age-standardised mortality rate (5.4 per
100,000) compared to the other regions. The Wales (3.8) and North West (3.4)
rates were also significantly higher compared to the England average (2.8).
The Northern Ireland (2.9) and Republic of Ireland (2.8) rates did not differ
significantly from England.
Intentional or undetermined intent poisoning deaths 1996 to 2003 (to 2002
in Northern Ireland)
The number of intentional or undetermined deaths due to poisoning in Britain
and Ireland decreased by 24% between 1996 (2,639 deaths) to 2003.
There was a reduction in age-standardised mortality rate in England (-35%),
Northern Ireland (-19%), Wales (-1%) and all the English regions. The reduction
in England and the English regions was significant in nearly all cases, with
the largest reductions in the South East (-45%) and South West (-43%). There
was an increase in the Republic of Ireland (12%) and Scotland (9%) rates but
these were not statistically significant changes. |
