Sign up to the first edition of Injury Prevention News (IPN)!

IPN is the joint electronic newsletter of the Injury Observatory for Britain and Ireland (IOBI) and the Collaboration for Accident Prevention and Injury Control (CAPIC)

The purpose of this newsletter is to support injury prevention practitioners working in all areas of injury prevention and dealing with all age groups. IPN is a FREE source of information on new initiatives, publications of statistics, research findings, opportunities and training events and will highlight new additions to IOBI and CAPIC websites.

HOME SAFETY EQUIPMENT HELP FOR VULNERABLE FAMILIES

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has just announced an £18 million national home safety equipment scheme to provide safety equipment for vulnerable families. For more information click here

NOW AVAILABLE - European countries scored on child and adolescent injury prevention

Child Safety Report Cards have been produced by Eurosafe for 18 countries, summarising each country's performance to July 2006 with respect to the level of safety provided to children and adolescents through national level policy. They describe:
1) how well a country is doing to make it safe for children,
2) what priority issues need to be addressed, and
3) which good practices should be adopted, implemented and enforced to prevent accidental injuries and to save more children’s lives.

NEW - Road Safety Wale's newsletter 'Road Safety Low Down' can now be found in the Newsletter section.

NEW - Safer Fireworks a website launched by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) containing all the information neccesary to make sure your firework parties are fun rather than fraught with danger. As well as the Firework Code, the site includes a guide on how to organise a display and how to deal with specific types of fireworks from rockets to Catherine Wheels.

NOW AVAILABLE – YouthSafe systematic review of the available literature on preventing injuries in young people can be found in the ‘What Works in Preventing Injuries Section’

NOW AVAILABLE - Analyses produced by the Injury Observatory comparing the rates and trends in deaths as a result of injury between Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Wales, England and the nine English regions.

Interesting findings include:

  • Mortality rates for all injuries are significantly higher in Scotland, Republic of Ireland & Wales compared to England.
  • Homicides are significantly higher in Scotland compared to Wales, England & Republic of Ireland.
  • Falls are significantly higher in Scotland and Republic of Ireland compared to Wales and England.

Analyses of deaths due to Injury can be found in the Research and Statistics section.
