The Republic of Ireland (1.5 per 100,000) had a significantly higher age-standardised
mortality rate, and the South West region (0.5) had a significantly lower rate,
than the England average (0.9). The Northern Ireland (1.3), Scotland (1.1) and
Wales (1.0) rates did not differ significantly from England.
Pedestrian MVTA deaths 1996 to 2003 (to 2002 in Northern Ireland):
Scotland is excluded from the following analysis because it is not possible
to construct reliable information prior to the year 2000 due to changes in coding.
The number of pedestrians who died due to MVTAs in England, Wales and Ireland
decreased by 40% from 1996 (1,061 deaths) to 2003 (639 deaths).
There is a clear overall year on year trend in decreasing deaths, with a reduction
in age-standardised mortality rate in all regions and significant reductions
in most between 1996 and 2003. The Republic of Ireland consistently had the
highest rate throughout this time period, but observed a significant reduction
(-49%). The largest significant reductions were in the South West (-62%), North
East (-57%) and Wales (-52%). There was also a significant reduction in England
overall (-41%). Northern Ireland also observed a 40% rate reduction.
