The Republic of Ireland (12.6 per 100,000), Scotland (10.8), Northern Ireland
(10.4), and Wales (9.9) had significantly higher age-standardised rates of suicide,
and London (5.2) a significantly lower rate, compared to the England average
(6.0).
Suicides 1996 to 2003 (to 2002 in Northern Ireland)
The number of suicides in Britain and Ireland increased by 1% from 1996 (4,613
deaths) to 2003. There was a significant increase in mortality rate in Wales
(25%) and a significant reduction in England (-6%). However, no individual English
region observed a significant reduction. There were rate increases in Northern
Ireland (17%) and the Republic of Ireland (10%) and a rate reduction in Scotland
(-3%) but these changes were also not statistically significant. |
