Please see problems analysing intent regarding the inclusion of deaths in the following counts, at least in England and Wales, that may be later recoded as homicides.

Undetermined intent deaths 2003 (Northern Ireland 2002):

There were 2,583 deaths in Britain and Ireland where the intent was undetermined, split as follows:

Republic of Ireland 87 North East 123 East of England 188
Northern Ireland 12 North West 360 London 433

The Scotland (4.3) and Wales (3.7) rates did not differ significantly from England.

Undetermined intent deaths 1996 to 2003 (to 2002 in Northern Ireland)

The number of deaths of undetermined intent in Britain and Ireland increased by 8% from 1996 (2,398 deaths) to 2003. There was a significant four-fold increase in mortality rate in the Republic of Ireland (405%) and also a significant increase in the East Midlands (28%). There were rate increases in England (3%) and Wales (9%), and rate reductions in Scotland (-8%) and Northern Ireland (-32%) but these were not statistically significant changes.
