Unintentional poisoning deaths 2003 (Northern Ireland 2002):
There were 1,036 unintentional deaths due to poisoning in Britain and Ireland,
split as follows:

The North West (2.6 per 100,000) and Wales (2.5) had significantly higher age-standardised
mortality rates of unintentional deaths due to poisoning, and Scotland (0.6),
the West Midlands (1.1) and London (1.0) had significantly lower rates, compared
to the England average (1.6). Scotland’s rate was also significantly lower
compared to all the other regions. The Republic of Ireland (2.1) and Northern
Ireland (1.7) rates did not differ significantly from England.
Unintentional poisoning deaths 1996 to 2003 (to 2002 in Northern Ireland)
The number of unintentional deaths due to poisoning in Britain and Ireland
decreased by 19% from 1996 (1,274) to 2003.
The age-standardised mortality rate decreased in most regions between 1996
and 2003, with a 36% reduction in Northern Ireland and significant reductions
in the Republic of Ireland (-36%), England (-23%), the North West (-31%), London
(-63%) and the South West (-33%). There was an increase in Scotland (49%) and
Wales (1%) but these were not statistically significant changes. |
