CAPIC ANALYSIS: FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

CAPIC has analyzed the Fire and Rescue Services’ FDR-1 forms, which collects data on the nature and cause of the fire and limited data on casualties. The FDR-1 statistics are sent to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and appear in several official publications.  These analysis were performed for years ranging from 1999 to 2004.

CAPIC ANALYSIS: STATS19 COLLISION DATA

CAPIC has analyzed STATS19 data in Wales, which details the nature and location of the collision and a crude classification of injury severity.  The data are very useful for mapping the locations of collisions to plan road safety interventions.  These analysis were performed for years ranging from 1994 to 2005.

REACH OUT. NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR ACTION ON SUICIDE PREVENTION

The national strategy for action on suicide prevention, titled Reach Out, was published in September 2005.1 The definition of suicide used by the authors was ‘suicide is a conscious or deliberate act that ends one’s life when an individual is attempting to solve a problem that is perceived as unsolvable by any other means’. Reach Out makes the point that social changes have impacted on the nature and extent of suicidal behaviour in Ireland. Suicide rates doubled during the 1980s and 1990s. This was a time when society experienced considerable transition from an agricultural rural economy to an urban service-orientated one.

Injury mortality and morbidity among children aged 0-14 varies substantially depending on the child’s age, gender, socio-economic group, cultural and/or ethnic group, and where they live. This report describes and seeks to understand these variations and explains why each factor is associated with injury risk. It then highlights how a range of intervention studies have attempted to address these inequalities.

This is a 3 year strategy designed to meet the 2020 target of eradicating child poverty. In addition to income levels, the quality of life of children and young people is influenced by access to education or healthcare, decent housing and concerns about crime and security. The strategy’s strongest focus is upon children’s earliest years.  By making £50 million available between 2005 and 2008 for an initiative for disadvantaged children in their early years. The document sets out guiding principles, issues, proposed methods and yardsticks for success.

NATIONAL SERVICE FRAMEWORK FOR CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE & MATERNITY SERVICES
